If you ask me, D5000 should be perfectly fine as a starter/amateur digital SLR camera. D90 will take you to a semi-advanced amateur level though, with more manual controls, and a sensor envied by many competitors, even though they don't admit to it:-). You can read the full reviews/comparisons at my blog, the link is given in the information section to the top right of this page (under the 'subscribe ' button).
As far as the lenses go, both have a pretty decent selection. Nikons are generally a little more expensive, but not by a whole lot. Also remember that you don't buy a lens everyday. I was prepared for it, since I definitely wanted the Nikon colors.
hey Prashant,
really need help...cant choose between the nikon d90 or the canon eos 50d....hav seen both ur reviews n STILL can't make up my mind.....i mean does havin a 11 point AF system as compared to a 9 point system make any difference and does a 14 bit processor make THAT big a difference.....n price being not a parameter..which is a better buy in terms of performance, choice of lenz available in the market etc etc....plz advice...i am really in a major fix here!!!!
Adorama/Amazon both are good. The advantage of using Amazon though is they have an immediate turn around time if you dont like the order. They REALLY are the world's most customer friendly web shopping portal, and I am only speaking from experience. Adorama always pack the stuff better than Amazon though. I have dealt with both, but would go with Amazon for my next purchases, even if I have to pay a little more. Beware of the Amazon authorized sellers though!! I only buy direct from Amazon.

I also owned a Canon 450D, 40D, and 50D before this one. Personally, I found D90 results more aesthetically pleasing. You can read the full reviews/comparisons at my blog, the link is given in the information section to the top right of this page (under the 'subscribe ' button).
so did your second nikon suffer a HOT PIXEL problem....or waz it only in the initial modelz...as purchasing a unit now..wud not carry the problem right......n is buy from amazon a good idea...as the shipment comez to india..dont you hav to pay import n custom duties extra
I have tried both. I am a big fan of the live view feature on Canon 50d and how it lets you truly interpolate into the scene as you zoom (in face that was the reason I wanted it over a d90). But soon I found myself yearning for the d90 colors. The dynamic range and richness of colors on d90 was definitely a plus point for me. I also considered the fact that I won't use the live view as much unless I am doing macro work. And so I chose to keep the d90 (better colors, video mode).

I am not sure but doesn't HongKong have an equivalent of Amazon?
And a few hot pixels in millions should be ok I still have 1 or 2, but not noticeable unless at high ISO settings (>=1600 ISO) and long exposures.
